Facts of Life

Haywire World.

Link.

1. A survey of 7,000 people by covering six countries found that the Shell logo, the Mercedes Benz badge and the five Olympic rings were more easily recognised by those polled than the Christian cross. Nearly 80 per cent could recognize the Macdonalds Golden Arches but only 54 per cent recognized the cross.

2. More than 300 million people in the world are suffering from obesity.

3. And yet, while 300 million people eat too much, some 800 million go hunger. A large proportion of the 800 million hungry live in Africa, with less than US$1 ($1.60) a day to buy the bare necessities. At the same time, 21 million cows in the European Union are being subsidised — ie, the farmers get the cash — to the tune of US$2.50 per cow per day under the Common Agricultural Policy.

4. More than 150 countries still practise torture. The USA even "outsources" torture to "friendly" states like Egypt to get their dirty work done for them.

5. In 2002, a whopping 81 per cent of the world's executions were carried out in China, Iran and the US. China/Iran I geddit. But the free and independent USA? The country that hosts the spread winged eagle and the statue of liberty and the headquarters of most of the human rights activist organizations is the 3rd largest "hanger" of human beings.

6. 37 armed conflicts are in progress (civil wars included) in 30 countries around the world. They involve a staggering 2.3 billion people. Population of the world is just over 6 billion.
